The first thing the sun gives you is not a tan: it is a clock signal.
Why it matters: natural morning light, and especially blue light, tells the brain that it is daytime. It helps synchronize the biological clock: alertness, energy, mood, appetite, and melatonin production in the evening.
What to do: step outside for a few minutes in the morning. It is not to tan, or even primarily to produce vitamin D. It is to send a clear signal: the day is starting.
Vitamin D synthesis and skin comfort do not require the same exposure.
Why it matters: vitamin D is made thanks to UVB rays, so when the sun is high enough. But that is also when the skin is under the most strain.
What to do: use the shadow rule. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun is high and UV rays are more intense. Keep exposure short, progressive, and adapted to your phototype. Beyond a certain threshold, your body does not produce more vitamin D: it mostly accumulates oxidative stress.
A tan feels reassuring, but it protects far less than people think.
